Can-Am ATVs and side-by-side vehicles are manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) a Canadian company. BRP owns manufacturing facilities in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Finland and Austria and its vehicles are distributed in over 100 countries by more than 4,000 dealers and distributors. Can-Am offers a full line of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) that are designed for riders of all skill levels and age groups.
A Brief History of Can-Am
The company was founded in 1942 as L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée (Bombardier Snow Car Limited) by Joseph-Armand Bombardier in Valcourt, Quebec, Canada. The name Can-Am didn’t appear until the 1970s, when BRP created it as a motorcycle brand. Initially, the Can-Am made high-performance dirt bikes, and were successful in this sector, becoming the first company to sweep the American Motorcycle Association 250cc Motocross National Championship in 1974.
Despite the success, 1987 was the last production year for Can-Am dirt bikes, the company instead turned their attention to ATVs, once again operating under the Bombardier name. A prototype version of the BRP Traxter, a utility-based ATV, was released in February 1998, and a year later ATV Magazine named the new BRP Traxter “ATV of the Year.”
What followed was a succession of ATV and Side-by-Side vehicle releases including sport, utility and even more success in the racing scene. Up until 2006 all the ATVs launched by BRP were named after Bombardier ATV but then they decided to rebrand the name to Can-Am. In 2010 Can-Am launched the Commander, one of their best lineups, and in 2013 the Maverick which became another successful line.
Where Are Can-Am ATVs Made?
BRP is a global leader of powersports vehicles, propulsion systems and boats, built on over 75 years of ingenuity. The company’s other assets include Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft, Can-Am ATVs, Alumacraft, Manitou, Quintrex, Stacer and Savage boats, Evinrude and Rotax marine propulsion systems as well as Rotax engines. Can-Am is mostly a Canadian brand that launched its first manufacturing plant outside of Canada in 2007.
In 2007 BRP launched its first manufacturing plant outside of Canada, in Mexico. Along with ATV assembly, the Juarez, Mexico plant is also putting together the Rotax engines for the ATVs. This is the first time Rotax engines are being manufactured outside of Austria and the first time BRP engines and units are being assembled in the same facility. BRP also has manufacturing plants in the United States, Finland and Austria.
BRP has three manufacturing plants operating in Mexico. The Juarez 2 plant assembles Can-Am side-by-side vehicles, manufactures related components and produces SSV accessories such as bumpers, frames and brackets. The company’s plant in Querétaro assembles Sea-Doo Spark personal watercraft and Rotax engines for Can-Am ATVs and SSVs.
These vehicles are designed for a specific purpose, those who want to work on projects will benefit from a utility model, and those who want to chase high-speed thrills might prefer a sport model instead.
